Projects to rebuild Halbja, Shorash in Iraq's Kurdistan

Iraq's Kurdistan government allocated eight million dollars to rebuild the Sulaimaniyah cities of Halbja and Shorash.

"A project with $ 8 million budget was approved by the Kurdistan government to rebuild the cities of Halbja and Shorash as they reflect the Kurds sacrifices in Anfal campaign in late 1980s," the government adviser for rebuilding and development affairs, Dara Yara, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

The project covers rehabilitating the basic services in the two cities including roads, sewerage and water plants, he added.

"Iraq's Kurdistan President launched a campaign to rebuild the villages affected by the Iraqi army anti-Kurds Anfal campaign and encouraged residents back to their homes," the adviser said.

Only recently, 15 houses were constructed and 20 others were rebuilt in Mamjalka village, he added.

Halbja city was a target to the large-scale operation Anfal by the Iraqi army in late 1980s of which Saddam and six aides are tried now for killing 180,000 Kurds.
Halbja mayor Fuad Saleh said $ 563,000 were allocated by the Kurdistan government to rebuild Halbja memorial after it was set to fire by Kurds protesters early this year.
