orders of the Prime Minister at a cost of 27 million
dollars.
He further added that the Batifa project had started
15 days earlier at a cost of $300,000 and would

50 illegal houses

houses, built on public land, be demolished in Ain
Kawa quarter of the city.
This has led to protests by residents of these
houses who are demonstrating in front of the
Presidency of Council of Ministers and plan to go on
hunger strike until their demands are met.
One of the protesters said, "while I was working, I
was informed by my family that police were going to
demolish our house, so where should we suppose to go
in this holy Ramadan, we have no place, besides we
have 400 students in this quarter, where should they
go. We have been told we will receive 200 meter of
land and $1000 but it's only an oral agreement, we
don't even know the location of the land. Therefore
I call on the Kurdistan Regional Government to help
and save us".
However, the mayor of Central Erbil argued that they
have been given one month to leave there current
homes therefore the police had the right to demolish
their houses. We have offered 250 square meter of
land and an amount of money in compensation. There
used to be130 illegal houses but now there are only
50 left. They [the residence of these illegal
houses] want to move to the Betwanay Taza quarter
however we do not want to differentiate between
people; these 50 houses want to impose conditions on
us to separate themselves from others who have
already moved. We refused their demands and
demolished their houses".
This latest crisis has happened amidst an
unprecedented boom in the Erbil housing market which
