A former finance official in Kurdistan government killed in Kirkuk 2.10.2006

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (Iraq) October 2, --  A former finance official in Iraq's Kurdistan government was killed in Kirkuk by a group of insurgents, said a security source Monday.

The source told KUNA that Adnan Rashid, Iraq's Kurdistan head of the financial ministry in Sulaimaniyah, was targeted in Al-Kadraa neighborhood in Kirkuk.

The attack resulted in the death of the official and the injury of his son who was later on sent to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, masked gunmen attacked two policemen in Kirkuk one of whom was killed and the other injured.

The former Iraqi president forced about 250,000 Kurdish residents to give up their homes to Arabs in the 1970s, to "Arabize" the city and the region's oil industry.

Kirkuk city is not under the full control of Kurdistan Regional Government administration. A referendum in 2007 will decide whether the oil-rich Kurdish province should be annexed to the safe semiautonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq's north.
