Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan Region (Iraq), October 30, -- Schools in
the Iraqi Kurdish province of Sulaimaniyah will not
be taking any more non-Kurd students of the
displaced Iraqi families.
"The school year has already started more than one
month and a half ago in all schools in the province
and the monthly exams will start within days while a
large number of Arab students coming to Kurdistan
have not yet enlisted in schools," Sheikh Hassan
Sheikh Mostafa, head of the education department,
said
"We decided not to accept any more Arab students who
have not applied yet to join schools as their
chances of succeeding are very slim this year," he
said.
Many families fled from central and southern
provinces to Iraqi Kurdistan after the fall of
former president Saddam Hussein's regime to escape
worsened security and sectarian conflicts.
The number of non-Kurdish students in the region
reached 600 this year.
