Erbil, Kurdistan
Region (Iraq), -- Lawmakers in Iraqi Kurdistan's
regional parliament have refused to carry regular
Iraqi passports, demanding they be issued diplomatic
ones to emphasise the growing autonomist tendency of
their region.
"We have been waiting for over a year for the
diplomatic passports, but we were issued ordinary
ones instead that any normal citizen can obtain in a
single day," one of the lawmakers, Ariz Abdallah
told reporters on Friday.
Abdallah accused the Iraqi interior ministry of
"discrimination" since "members of the Kurdish
parliament don't represent their people any less
than the Iraqi [national] parliament member
represent theirs."
Last month Kurdistan's president, Massoud Barazani,
banned the
Iraqi flag from offices and schools in the
region, a move that has riled the central government
in Baghdad as well as Arab and Turkomen minorities
who live in the region. |

Barazani's decree says only the Kurdish flag can
hang from government buildings and checkpoints, but
it allows for the Iraqi flag - red white and black
horizontal stripes, with three green stars and the
words Allahu Akbar (God is Great) - at "official
functions", but without the religious phrase.
