Kurdish discussions on Washington Post 6.10.2006
By Vladimir van Wilgenburg, Journalist, Netherlands

Friday, October 06, 2006

Recently Washington Post opened “PostGlobal“, an online discussion of international issues at. I know Washington Post mostly for bad information about Kurds and Turkish columns about Kurdish issues.

But it seems, that Washington Post now also gives attention to the Kurdish point of view. Although I also have to confess, that last year Washington Post published the column “Kurdish Vision of Iraq”. This was written by the Kurdish president of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The Washington Post international discussion forum moderated by David Ingatius and Fareed Zakaria has posed the following question, to which the Kurd Baqi Barzani among many other leading global commentators have responded:

Vladimir van Wilgenburg, Journalist, Netherlands

Despite U.S. efforts to forge a "unity" government in Iraq, sectarian violence there continues at a frightening level. Iraqis are already separating into different ethnic cantons as neighborhoods are "cleansed" by Shiite death squads and Sunni insurgents.

Given the mess in Iraq, should the U.S. move toward "federalism plus" -- a plan that devolves power into Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish regions? What would be the consequences of such a de-facto partition for the rest of the Middle East?

I think most Kurds will agree with the opinion of Peter Galbriath: Divided, Iraq Can Stand! They are pro-partition or for "federalism plus".

Another interesting and more historical discussion is the discussion forum: Republic of Kurdistan.

According to my friend Hassan Qazi, this discussion has unpublished information about the Mahabad republic in English.

The discussion is lead by the Kurdish professors Amir Hassanpour, Goran Nowicki, and Burhan Elturan. Experts and Kurdish intellectuals also give interesting comments on this issue.

I advise anyone interested in the Kurdish issue, to take a look.
