BAGHDAD, Iraq,
October 7, -- A Kurdish party accused Shiite
militias of killing Kurdish lawmaker Mohammed Ridha
Mahmoud, the first member of the current parliament
to be killed in sectarian violence.
During Friday prayers, the representative of Iraq's
most influential Shiite cleric urged militias to put
down their arms.
A curfew and vehicle ban was imposed in Baghdad for
most of Friday — a weekly occurrence to prevent
attacks on Muslims gathering at mosques for prayer.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called for
cooperation from the oil-rich Kurdish north in a
meeting with the region's president. She underlined
American worries that Kurds may be pushing too hard
too soon for autonomy.
About 4,000 Iraqi police have been killed and more
than 8,000 wounded in the past two years, said the
U.S. commander in charge of police training.
