Special prize to 'Daf' movie directed by Bahman Qubadi 31.10.2006
Spain-Film Festival-Prize

Madrid, October 31, Short documentary 'Daf' (an Iranian and Kurdish music instrument) directed by Kurdish Iranian film director Bahman Qubadi received jury's special prize in De Cosor International Movie Festival in Spain.

According to a statement by festival organizers, a copy of which was faxed to IRNA in Madrid on Monday, Daf also received 1,200 euros as part of the prize.

The documentary is 40 minutes long and is about a Kurd couple with blind children, who are trying to lead an
honest and proud life.

The festival wrapped up its work on Sunday evening after a week.

The best long documentary was " Mother house" from South Africa.

In this section 16 movies from different countries competed with each other.

"Danger Explorers" from Mexico received the prize as the best work on human rights issue.

Earlier this month Bahman Ghobadi, whose film "Half Moon" has been highly praised at the ongoing San Sebastian International Film Festival, said it is increasingly difficult to work in Iran, where his latest movie has been banned because a woman sings in it.

"Imagine my frame of mind when, having placed all my hopes in this film, after having done everything so that Iranians could see it, the government then decides it cannot be screened. What energy have I got left to continue making films?" he asked on the sidelines of the festival.

"In my country it is forbidden to listen to a woman's voice," explained Ghobadi. And in the film the musicians are accompanied by a female singer, Hesho, whose voice is heard several times during the film.

"I censored myself so that this film could be screened in Iran, but I did not get permission in the end, notably because this woman sings alone."

Ghobadi won San Sebastian's top prize two years ago, the Concha de Oro, for his film "Turtles Can Fly."
