Syria-Lebanon
31.Dec. 2005 The Arab human rights organization in
Syria said on Friday that a Kurdish Syrian citizen,
Shams Eddine Ahmad Mahmoud, was killed while he was
at work in a fuel station in Beirut on Thursday.
In a statement, the organization said that Shams
Eddine Mahmoud "was killed in Beirut by unidentified
persons, while on top of his work in a fuel station
in Beirut. He is from Siha village east of Qamishli,
noting that he was married and a father for 8
children.
The organization expressed great and great concern
over his killing and that it is "the second crime in
less than one month," demanding "the Lebanese
authorities to make a neutral investigation to find
the killers and prosecute them." The organization
also demanded the "Syrian authorities to follow up
the file of the Syrian citizens in Lebanon and to
take all measures for ensuring their security."
It is not clear if the killing was a result of the
politically charged atmosphere of tension between
the two countries, or if it was an unrelated event.
However, the spokesman for the organization Ammar
al-Qurabi considered that "there is a danger
threatening Syrian citizens in Lebanon and they have
to be careful while moving," appealing "all Lebanese
officials to stop offensive statements against
Syria, because this deepens the hatred of the
Lebanese, and a price for that is paid by innocent
Syrians rather that the Syrian authorities."
