Enhancing
Arab-Kurdish Fraternity
(Al-Ittihad)
Upon receiving al-Huriya satellite channel,
president Jalal Talabani called for adopting
Arab-Kurdish fraternity and strengthening
brotherhood for Iraqi national unity. He described
the channel as Iraqi Kurdish television providing a
platform for presenting Kurdish and Iraqi issues to
Arab viewers. He advised the staff to use experts
from different ethnicities to improve the channel.
He also suggested that they address Kurdish women's
issues and their legal demands for equality with
men. He showed his readiness to support the channel
by providing technical equipment.

Reconciliation Conference
(Al-Taakhi)
The Arab League agreed that the Iraqi reconciliation
conference (originally scheduled to take place
February 7, 2006 in Baghdad,) will be held after the
new government and parliament are formed. The
conference may be held in one of the neighbouring
Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan or the
United Arab Emirates if Iraq agrees. Amr Musa,
secretary-general of the Arab League, praised the
Iraqi political process and sincere attempts by the
different political factions to form a new national
unity government. Iraqi Coalition list member Humam
Hamoodi asked Musa to hold the conference before the
new government is formed to provide a unification
base for the various Iraqi political parties and
forces.

Negotiations for a Strong Government
(Al-Mada)
Iraqi foreign minister Hooshiar Zeebari said there
is a good chance that Iraqi politicians will form a
strong government, unlike the formation of the first
three governments after Saddam Hussein's regime.
Zeebari maintained that the new government is
legitimate because it was democratically elected by
the people in the December parliamentary elections.
This will improve the next government’s ability to
hold talks with other states and will improve its
local decisions as well. He said the new government
will be able to use its strength to cope with Iraq's
difficulties.

Muqtada al-Sadr Visits Lebanon
(Al-Mashriq)
Sources close to the young Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr
said he will visit Syria and Lebanon within the next
few days. The Washington Post newspaper reported
that Sadr has already visited Lebanon and met with
Hizbullah leader sheikh Hassan Nasrallah. The
sources affirmed that Sadr is still in Iran, and he
plans to visit Syria and Lebanon soon.

Secondary School Attack
(Baghdad)
An unidentified armed group attacked al-Saydiya
school for boys, killing the head master and a
teacher. One of the teachers said that veiled arm
men attacked the school and killed teacher Khalil
al-Shummari. He said they killed headmaster, Hussein
Badri, after detaining Badri and his assistant. The
attackers escaped.
