Al-Hamashi Replaces
(Special Tribunal Judge) Rizkar
(Tareek al-Shaab)
Ja'afar al-Musawi, prosecutor-general of the Iraqi
special tribunal trying (former Iraqi leader) Saddam
Hussein and seven of his top aides, said the court
has named Saeed al-Hamashi, one of the five tribunal
judges, as a temporary replacement for Judge Rizkar
Amin. Amin had overseen the tribunal (since it began
in October) and submitted his resignation last week.
He added that the government has not yet mentioned
the resignation, but Amin will not attend the next
trial session on 24 January.

No Bird Flu in Kurdistan Region
(Al-Ittihad)
The health ministry in the Kurdistan region affirmed
that the region is free from bird flu thanks to
strict measures it took to prevent the disease from
spreading from neighbouring Turkey. The ministry
worked hard to control the disease and stop it from
reaching the region through birds migrating (from
Turkey.) The ministry halted the import of birds
from countries where the disease was found and
established a special division to deal with the
issue.

(Talabani): Sunnis Must Participate in the
Government
(Al-Sabah)
President Jalal Talabani affirmed that the Kurds
support a national unity government and respect the
three candidates vying for the prime minister's
post. He noted that (vice-president) Adil
Abdul-Mahdi is closer to Kurds than the other two
candidates (current prime minister Ibrahim al-Ja'afari
and former prime minister Ayad Allawi.) He added
that it is constitutionally possible for Shia and
Kurdish parties to form a coalition government, but
the Kurds will go to any lengths for Sunni groups to
participate. Talabani added that in his (expected)
second term, he will try to activate the
constitutional and federal courts, to free the media
from government domination and to solve the issue of
Kirkuk.

(Baghdad)
Hassan al-Hindawi, a member of the Independent
Electoral Commission in Iraq, announced that 227
(out of 32,000) ballot boxes will be thrown out (for
voting irregularities.) He said the results will be
announced very soon and that the IECI is not
involved in the affairs of the international team
(investigating voter fraud allegations.) Meanwhile,
Ali al-Tamimi, spokesman of the Maram Movement (a
broad coalition protesting the election results and
demanding fraud investigations) said the
international team discovered many cases of

Al-Fadheela Party Calls for Oil Minister's
Resignation
(Al-Mada)
Al-Fadheela Islamic party called on the government
to fire the oil minister, Mohammed Bahrul Uloom. In
a declaration read by party spokesman Sheikh Hassan
al-Shummary, the party said the minister should
resign because he has fallen short in his mission to
establish an independent oil policy. It noted that
Iraq is still paying 60 billion dollars annually to
import oil from abroad. Shummary added that the
minister did not comply with the party’s position
that oil prices should not be raised and has not
eliminated corruption in his ministry. (Uloom
resigned from his post after the government decided
to hike fuel prices but returned as oil minister
last week.
