Talabani Seeks More
Authority
(Al-Mashriq)
President Jalal Talabani said he is not opposed to
current prime minister Ibrahim al-Jafa'ari being
named premier again even though the two have many
disagreements. He maintained that it is up to the
United Iraqi Alliance to nominate any candidate to
occupy that post. (The alliance holds the most seats
in parliament, and Ja'afari is a member.) He
emphasized that a national unity government must be
formed, consisting of all blocs that won seats in
the election. He hoped that the new government would
settle the issues of security and eliminating
terrorism. Talabani added that he would not vie for
the presidency under the same authorities he has
now.

Talabani Emphasises Forming National Unity
Government
(Al-Iraq al-Yoom)
President Jalal Talabani emphasized forming a
national unity government that includes the top four
coalitions (that won votes in the election): the
United Iraqi Alliance, the Kurdistan Alliance, the
Iraqi Accord Front and the Iraqi National List. He
added that national assembly speaker Hachim al-Hasani
has tackled the issue of (the divided and diverse
city of) Kirkuk, and that Kirkuk will be used as an
example of fraternity and reconciliation between the
different ethno-religious groups. He added that the
Kurds play a positive role in maintaining national
unity in a democratic and diverse Iraq. This was
contrary to claims by the deposed regime (of Saddam
Hussein) that the Kurds wanted to break from Iraq.
(Some groups remain concerned that the Kurds want to
break from Iraq, but Kurdish leaders have been
negotiators between Sunni Arab and Shia political
parties.

Al-Hafidh: Evidence Will Be Presented on
Electoral Violations
(Baghdad)
The Iraqi National List continuous its efforts to
prepare documents and evidence on electoral
violations and will send them to an international
committee investigating results (from the December
15 parliamentary elections.) Mahdi al-Hafidh, a
member of the Iraqi National List, said, “We have
many documents and evidence about violations and
offences in the elections.” He hoped that the
findings would not aggravate any political slate,
saying it is part of the democratic practice. He
advised all political parties to solve all of the
issues stemming from the election results.

National Accord, whose leaders head the Iraqi
National List.)
Curriculum Eradicated Praising Ba'athists and
Saddam
(Al-Sabah al-Jadeed)
In collaboration with the ministry of higher
education and scientific research, and the house of
books and documents, the supreme national committee
of de-Ba'athification began eradicating curricula
and theses from Iraqi universities that glorified
the Ba'athist regime and (former Iraqi leader)
Saddam Hussein. They will store all of the materials
in a special library, and students will not be able
to use them because the materials are unscientific.

is an independent daily paper.)
