New Permanent Representative of France to the
United Nations Held a Meeting with KRG Coordinator
to UN Affairs France’s Support for the Political
Process in Iraq
Jean-Maurice Ripert, the new Permanent
Representative of France to the United Nations
Office, held a meeting with Dr. Dindar Zebari
Kurdistan regional government Coordinator to UN
affairs at the France Permanent Representation to
the United Nations headquarters in Geneva,
Switzerland.
During the meeting the two sides discussed France’s
support for the political process and Iraq’s
reconstruction. The meeting was an opportunity to
review KRG cooperation with UN agencies in the
northern part of the Iraq in several sectors:
institutional, educational and academic cooperation.
Projects in the health sector, specifically projects
to rehabilitate hospital services in the region and
infrastructure, in particular the installation of a
water treatment stations.
KRG Coordinator stressed Iraq's constitution creates
a fully self-governing Kurdistan and includes a
procedure to resolve the status of Kirkuk. France
new permanent representative presented his
government plays its role through the UN. French
role is one of assisting, within the international
community, in the current process in Iraq. Since its
participation in Operation Desert Storm, France has
sought to implement a policy based on three
principles: preserving the stability of the Middle
East; ensuring the authority of the UN Security
Council; avoiding a humanitarian disaster among
Iraqi civilians
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Ripert
served from 2003 to 2005 as the Director of the
United Nations and International Organizations
Department of the Foreign Ministry of France. From
2000 to 2003, he was Ambassador of France to Greece.
From 1997 to 2000, he was Diplomatic Counsellor to
the Prime Minister of France, and before that, from
1996 to 1997, he was Vice-Director of the United
Nations and International Organizations Department.
Kurdistan Regional Government Coordinator to UN
Affairs Meets German’s Permanent Representative to
the United Nations Office and other International
Organizations in Geneva
During his meetings at the UN headquarter with
several governmental and non-governmental
representatives Dr. Dindar Zebari Kurdistan regional
government Coordinator to the United Nations visited
Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations
office and other international organizations in
Geneva was received by His Excellency Ambassador
Michael Steiner Permanent Representative.
Both delegates had discussed that Iraq and Kurdistan
in particular heading in the right direction on the
issues of freedom and democracy, elected national
government, having constitution, relative security
in northern and southern parts of the country. On
his part KRG Coordinator to the United Nations
reaffirmed the constitution written by the Iraqi
National Assembly represents the will of the Iraqi
people and its leadership.
Kurdistan Regional Government Coordinator visited
United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations and the
Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations and
Specialized Institutions in Geneva
Kurdistan regional government Coordinator Dr. Dindar
Zebari holds meeting with Ms. Caroline Rees, Head of
the Human Rights Team in the UK Mission to discuss
the upcoming United Nations Commission of Human
Rights meeting prepared for next March and April
reviewing human rights progress in Iraq.
Dr. Zebari expressed KRG appreciation for the
efforts spent by the UNAMI agencies and the office
of human rights in Iraq for benefiting the people of
Iraqi Kurdistan. The coordination and consultations
between UN agencies and KRG in addressing the
successes, problems and related issues were
discussed. KRG Coordinator presented ideas and views
in the fields of capacity building, human rights and
civil society. Ms. Helen Upton, first secretary
(legal department) has also attended the meeting.
On the other hand KRG Coordinator Dr. Dindar Zebari
attended a meeting with Permanent Representative His
Excellency Ambassador Baha Hussain Al-Shibib at the
Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations
office and specialized institutions in Geneva.
Discussions covered issues relating to the terms of
reference between KRG and the United Nations
Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and other
affiliated agencies in the filed, the stage of
progress achieved in the UN programs and their
intended effect on the economy of the region.
