In Geneva KRG regional
coordinator Dr. Dindar Zebari held meeting with the
International Organization of Migration Director
General Mr. Brunson McKinley at IOM HQ. Dr Zebari
stressed, the Kurdish region has been de-facto,
independently governed since the first Gulf War in
1991.
This means that not all of Iraq’s borders are
currently controlled by the central authorities in
Baghdad hence KRG’s participation and vision is
vital in the future upcoming coopertraive
activities.
In return IOM Director General presented that the
organization has been providing assistance to
returning Iraqi and Kurdish migrants for over ten
years. In addition to institution building support
to KRG ministries with migration functions, at
regional level IOM has committed itself to design
and deliver trainings for immigration officers in
Kurdistan region in order to increase their most
needed core and specialized skills. In parallel with
the language training IOM started delivering
document examination training for immigration
officers based in Kurdistan.
Ms. Anne – Marie Buschman – Petit, special advisor
