Kurdistan stops imports of poultry from
Turkey

ERBIL, Kurdistan
(North Iraq), Jan 12 (KUNA) -- The provincial
Government of Kurdistan has decided to ban imports
of live chicken from neighboring Turkey as a
precaution against outbreak of the deadly bird flu
virus.
Azad Ezz-Eddine, the minister of agriculture of the
self-administered province, said in a statement on
Thursday that the provincial government decided to
stop imports of live chicken from neighboring
Turkey, ban hunting and impose strict supervision on
the birds trade in the Kurdish region. |

Authorities will also sterilize tyres of trucks and
vehicles crossing the border checkpoints from
Turkey.
Tahseen Nameq Abdullah, the agriculture
undersecretary in Kurdistan, said in a statement
that a special operations room was set up to monitor
the birds market and sterilize poultry farms, adding
that the government of the region allocated 750,000
US dollars for the precautions.
Dr. Salman Halbaji, the director of information of
the health ministry, said the authorities started a
wide-scale campaign to educate the people of the
region about hazards of the disease and necessary
precuations to avert a possible flare-up of it in
northern Iraq.
International agencies have urged states neighboring
Turkey to take necessary precautions to avert
possible spillover of the deadly disease.
