VIENNA, Austria
Jan 9, - Austrian Airlines said it would begin in
March the first regular commercial flights between
Europe and Kurdistan-Iraq.
'Plans are under way to provide service starting
March 9 to the city of Erbil' in the Kurdistan
region of northern Iraq, the airline company said in
a communique, service will be increased from two to
three flights a week in May, Austrian said.
The choice of the Kurdish capital, the fourth
largest city in Iraq, was based on its reputation as
a 'safe' city, the outlook for development there and
the presence of major international businesses as
well as a base of operations for the United Nations,
the airline said.
Flights on an Airbus A-319 will start on a bi-weekly
basis and then increase to three times a week
beginning in May.
AUA is the first European carrier to obtain the
right to offer commercial flights to Iraq, the
company said.
The carrier said it expects passengers for the
flights to Iraq to come mainly from western and
eastern Europe and North America, who will be routed
