Talabani: "Autonomy for Turkmens in Kurdistan" 30.1.2006
By Vladimir van Wilgenburg, Journalist - Netherlands

Kurds working on plan to give Turkmens autonomy in areas they're a majority in new constitution they're drafting for regional Kurdistan region reported the Turkish newspaper The New Anatolian.

The Kurdish President Jalal Talabani of Iraq says the Kurds are considering the possibility of giving the Turkmens autonomy in regions where they're a majority in the new constitution that is being drafted for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

“Kurdish leaders are discussing the possibility of granting Turkmens autonomy in the northern regions where they're a majority,” the Iraqi president said.

In an exclusive interview the president said the new constitution for the Kurdistan Region is being drafted in the Kurdish Parliament but did not elaborate when asked how the Kurds would determine where the Turkmens are in a majority.

Talabani repeated that there could be no Kurdish independence, especially without the blessing of Turkey. “The Arab Shiites have Iran, the Arab Sunnis have the Arab states and especially Saudi Arabia. We only have Turkey.”

The Kurds give a good example to Turkey how the Kurds should be treated. The Kurds at least give the Turkmen autonomy, let them speak their own language, and let them preserve their culture.

Turkey on the other hand keeps the assimilation policy alive with schools teaching Kurdish children Turkish, saying that area's with a Kurdish majority are Turkish.. etc.

In the Kurdistani parliament politicians can participate with their Turkmen identity. In the Turkish government, Kurds can participate… this is true. But only if they express their “Turkish identity” and deny their Kurdish identity. The Turkmen minister of sports in Kurdistan even gave an interview in Turkmen.

I would be surprised to see a Kurdish minister with a Kurdish identity in Turkey… and even more surprised to see him give a speech in Kurdish. He would probable would receive a fine or a punishment.
