The national carrier,
Iraqi Airways, has signed a $500 million worth
contract for the purchase of new passenger planes.
An Iraqi Airways source, refusing to be named, said
the planes, once arriving, will help the company to
re-launch scheduled international flights to
Istanbul, Tehran, Cairo, Amman and Beirut.
Scheduled flights will also be resumed to some
European capitals, he said.
Iraqi Airways now has eight old passenger planes
some of which are reported to be still stranded in
airports in the Middle East.
Iraq flew its entire fleet of civilian aircraft
outside the country for protection prior to the
start of 1991 war over Kuwait.
The company was forbidden from flying due to U.N.
trade sanctions imposed for former President Saddam
Hussein’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
