Villagers not desire to be village guards are
oppresed
ŞIRNAK 14.Sep (DİHA)
- The residents of Kızılsu Village are being
oppressed by the chief village guard of the district
as they do not want to be village guards, say the
locals.
The chieh village guards Abdullah Kaya and Bahattin
Çelik try to persuade the villagers to be guards but
as they do want to be, they are being oppressed, a
villager not revealing his name. "The cief guards do
not let us take our herds to the countryside as we
do want to be guards. We were oppressed many times
before and this time they want to weigh down us
economically. We did not accept to be guards in the
hardest days and we will not accept now either."
said the villager.
He also said they will leave their villages not to
be guards and apply to the legal ways if necessary.
The village guardship has been going on in the
southeastern and eastern regions of Turkey where the
majority of the residents are Kurds. Those village
guards who are Kurdish in origin are employed by the
Turkish government to fight alongside Turkish
soldiers against the PKK guerrillas. International
and local human rights associations have for years
reported of grave human rights abuses committed by
the paramilitaries against Kurdish civilians.
