11.Sep- Attacked without being warned by the police
after the declaration in the name of 'Initiation of
78's condemning the cancellation decision taken by
the Governorship about the Sept 12 Meeting, 50
demonstrators have been taken into custody.
Using pepper spray and batons, the police beat the
chairman of Limter-İş Cem Dinç as well.
After the master meeting to be held in Kadıkoy Arena
with the participations of many NGOs, political
parties and syndicates was postponed one month fore
by the Governorship on the grounds of claims about
provocations and safety problems, more than 250
people gathered in the arena and protested the
decision. The group made a press deliration about
the case but just before they dispersed they were
attacked by the police with pepper spray and batons
without any previous warning. Despite the warnings
of the Arrangement Commission, the police encircled
a group and took them into custody after beating
them severely. The chairman of Limter-İş Cem Dinç
and that of Textile-Syndicate Ayşe Yumli Yeter were
among those beaten. The demonstrators taken into
custody shouted slogans such as 'Humanity will beat
the torture' and 'One day the instigators will give
account to the public' in the police cars.
The real provocation was done by the state. We came
together to protest the postponement in a democratic
way but the police attacked on us without warning as
the state could not put up with our democratic
demands. The police violated the rights and laws in
Constitution, said the spokesman of the Initiation
of 78's
Those taken into custody have been taken to Istanbul
Security Branch.
20 apply to the court for torture

11.Sep. - 20 people taken into custody after the
demonstration held in Siirt to protest the racist
attacks towards the Kurds in Bozüyük, applied to the
Siirt Public Prosecutor on the grounds that they
were tortured under custody and.
Among them Metin Aydoğan said "After the
demonstration we went to the province building of
DEHAP. The police broke the doors and raided the
building. They beat us with batons and sticks. They
even continued their violent attacks in the bus and
while we were in the police station. They swore and
abused us. One of the police put out his cigarette
on my arm. It was a total brutality but we, still,
demand peace and brotherhood."
There are signs of batons on my back and legs. They
were too harsh towards us. What are you doing in
DEHAP? Let Apo to rescue you, said another victim
Sabriye Tunç. Another victim of the police attacks
Güler Polat said the police hit her on eyes with
their batons and the baton signs still exist on her
body.
'Do not mention the laws'
The county chairman of DEHAP Şükrü Oğuz said:
"Almost 100 police officers raided the office. They
were very harsh against the people inside. They
damaged the office as well. There were police
officers on the stairs as well and they were beating
as, too. The torture lasted in the police station.
We were 18 people in a cell of 4 sq. They did not
meet any of our needs. If there were anybody asked
to go to toilet, they were swearing. I reminded them
the laws but 'Do not even mention to the laws'
replied the police."
'This is result of General Staff's wish'
Mr. Oğuz said even a woman with her baby on hand was
beaten seriously. "They did not give those demanding
to pray. They collected the racists around the
police station and they shouted slogans while we
were under custody. When we were taken to the
hospital, the police threaten the doctors. None of
our friends were examined properly." said Oğuz. He
condemned the Director of General Staff for the
attacks.
'The right of living is being taken aim'
The province chairman Human Rights Association Vetha
Aydın said: "Those experienced in Siirt showed the
dimension of the torture in Turkey. The harsh
practices against those taken into custody are
violations the right to live. These practices should
be stopped and those torturing them should be tried
in the court immediately. They consulted us and we
helped them. Especially the women were tortured in
the police station."
