DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Sept 29 (AFP) - 15h30 -
Three militants from the rebel Kurdistan Workers'
Party (PKK) were killed Thursday in clashes with
security forces in Turkey's southeast, officials
said.
Two were shot dead in the province of Sirnak, which
borders Iraq, and the third was killed in a shootout
in Bitlis, to the north.
The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Ankara as
well as the United States and the European Union,
has waged a bloody separatist campaign in Turkey's
mainly Kurdish southeast since 1984 in a conflict
that has claimed some 37,000 lives since.
Unrest in the region escalated this year after the
PKK called off a five-year unilateral ceasefire in
June 2004.
The PKK proclaimed a six-week ceasefire until
October 3, but the army has brushed this aside and
clashes in the region continue.
