DIYARBAKIR, Kurdistan-Turkey, Sept 20 (AFP) -
12h05 - A land surveyor was killed and two workers
were injured in the eastern Turkish province of
Bingol in a mine explosion blamed on Kurdish rebels,
local officials said Tuesday.
In a statement, the Bingol governor's office blamed
the explosion, which occurred late Monday during a
land surveying operation near the town of Genc, on
"the terrorist organisation", which is how Turkish
officials describe outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party
(PKK).
Landmine attacks have become part of a pattern of
PKK violence since the group called off a five-year
unilateral ceasefire with Ankara in June 2004.
Last month, the rebels declared a one-month truce
until September 20, which was brushed aside by the
Turkish army.
The PKK leadership said in a statement published on
the website of the pro-Kurdish MHA news agency that
it will make a declaration Wednesday on the group's
next course of action.
Some 37,000 people have died since 1984, when the
PKK, considered a terrorist group by Turkey as well
as the European Union and the United States, took up
arms for self-rule in the country's mainly Kurdish
southeast.
