Germany bans Ozgur Politika Newspaper  6.9.2005

BERLIN - Germany on Monday banned the publisher of a newspaper with links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Interior Minister Otto Schily said: "The government is taking decisive action against any activities which have an extremist or terrorist background."

The E. Xani publishing company, based in Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt, produced the Turkish language newspaper Ozgur Politika which had a print run of 10,000 copies.

Schily described it as "the mouthpiece" of the PKK, a group considered to be a terrorist organisation by the Turkish government, the United States and the European Union.

The PKK last year ended a five-year-old ceasefire and has stepped up attacks in Turkey in recent months.

Germany, Yesterday September 5, 2005, at 9 a.m., the German police forces raided the buildings of the daily newspaper Ozgur Politika, the Mesopotamian News Agency, MHA based in Neu Isenburg, Germany and the Kurdish music organization, Mir based in Köln.

The personnel is kept under the police custody until about 4 pm and following this raid, the German federal internal ministry, being based on the 4th article of association’s law, took a decision concerning the closure of the daily newspaper Ozgur Politika and put an end to its publication.

MHA News Agency, Ozgur Politika, the Publisher Mesopotamia, Mir music organisation and the other associations always achieved their work suitably within the framework of the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany.

These organizations respect the principles of the press and their only aim was to make aware the whole world regarding the Kurdish question.

The German government had preceded these kinds of pressures in the past as well. Whatever is the pretext, the goal was always to quieten the voice of the Kurdish people, also to extend the policy with the Turkish State against the Kurdish people.

But the voice of the Kurdish people cannot be quietened.

We call upon the democratic press to line up on the Kurdish people’s side and to condemn these attacks against the freedom of expression and the newspaper industry.
