Turkish nationalists attack Kurdish bus 5.9.2005

Newsdesk, Sep 4 DIHA - Turkish police stopped and turned back tens of thousands of Kurds heading with buses towards Gemlik in western Turkey to carry out a gigantic peaceful demonstration in support of the Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan.

The demonstrators were stopped in strategic positions on their way home and were held there by Turkish police until Turkish nationalists could organize and attack the Kurds. The worst attack was carried out in the city of Bozuyuk in the Bilecik province of western Turkey.

Thousands of Turkish ultra-nationalists in Bozuyuk attacked the buses and lynched two Kurds to death and injured at least 40. Turkish police stood by and watched while the nationalists carried out their attack. After more than 6 hours, the Turkish police decided to take the situation under control.

ANKARA, Turkey - A group of nationalist Turks attacked dozens of buses carrying pro-Kurdish demonstrators with stones on Sunday, following violent clashes between Kurdish demonstrators and police in Istanbul, reports said.

On their return, angry Turkish nationalists stopped the convoy at a makeshift roadblock, set car tires on fire and smashed the windows of the buses with stones, video showed. Several demonstrators were injured, according to news reports.

Ocalan‘s Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, announced a unilateral cease-fire on Aug. 19 after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to improve economic conditions in predominantly Kurdish areas and offer greater cultural freedoms for Kurds.

A senior rebel commander, Murat Karayilan, said he would not be "held responsible" if violence increased after the one-month cease-fire expired on Sept. 20, pro-Kurdish Ozgur Gundem newspaper reported
