LONDON - The
Syrian Committee for Human Rights has said that it
regards the Higher State Security Court in Syria as
unconstitutional which does not have the potential
for being an unbiased tribunal.
The London-based Opposition Committee said on Monday
the court had sentenced Kurd citizens Abdul Karim
Allo, Mohammed Noamman and Mustafa Khalil each to
two-and-a-half years on the charge of being members
of the Kurdistan Labour Party, and attempting to
spoil relations with a friendly country (Turkey).
The court, meanwhile, adjourned pronouncing the
verdict against Ahmed Rostom, Shaikhamoos Mohammed
Qasim, Mohammed Ali Hassan and Mohammed Mohammed
Qasim till December 11.
In a statement issued here, the committee called for
referring the said accused to ordinary courts of
justice, ensuring their rights to defend themselves,
as well as releasing them to stand trial.
The committee regarded the continuity of the Higher
Security State Court to issue what it termed
pre-arranged allegations and convicting them with
varied jail terms as a clear violation of human
rights and international treaties and norms of which
Syria is a signatory.
The committee said international humanitarian bodies
had fulfilled their obligations towards Syrian
citizens and ensured their protection from arbitrary
arrest.
