More than 500,000
registered to vote in salahaddin

Salah Khalil al-Jubouri, head of the Salahaddin
branch of the Independent Electoral Commission,
announced that the number of voters registered in
the governorate has exceeded 500,000 people.
Al-Jubouri told Azzaman yesterday that the
commission has opened 249 polling stations in the
governorate to receive more than 500,269 voters who
were registered according to the food ration
coupons.

More than 15 million voters eligible to
participate in referendum

The Independent Electoral Commission for Iraq (IECI)
said that the approximate number of Iraqis who are
eligible to take part in the referendum and
elections has increased to 15.5 million voters,
after nearly 1 million citizens were added to the
voter records of the last elections. Dr. Fareed
Ayar, an IECI member, said the deadline for
recording voters will end today, when the time
period given to Anbar governorate expires. He
explained the registration centers have recorded
more than 947,000 new voters.

Lawmakers Unable to Agree on Constitution
Amendments

Negotiations between the main political blocs
regarding the text of the draft constitution have
resulted in no agreement on amendments before it is
presented to the public. Baha' al-A'raji, a
constitution committee member from the United Iraqi
Alliance, announced yesterday that the parliament
has ended its talks regarding the draft constitution
without agreeing on amendments and the draft would
be printed in its current shape.

EU Welcomes New Draft Iraqi Constitution

The European Union president welcomed the draft
Iraqi constitution and noted the process was
difficult, but all Iraqi groups were involved in
writing it, according to a statement. The EU
encouraged all Iraqis to participate in the next
step of the political process through voting in the
referendum, which is schedule to take place on
October 15. The statement also said that the EU will
continue to help the Iraqi people in all possible
ways, such as helping in organizing the referendum
and election.

Conference Focuses on Reforming Education
(Al-Ittihad)
The Ministry of Education held a conference about
reforming the educational system in Iraq. It was
held under the name "Towards a Developed Education
System to Build New Iraqi Individuals." Education
Minister Adul Falah al-Sudani talked about the
importance of reforming the curriculums and removing
all parts that have been misused by the former
regime. "Everyone of us is required to take part in
reform," al-Sudani said. "We should make it in a way
that prepares an individual to serves his country."
A number of educational experts spoke at the event
and all of them confirmed the importance of
reforming the education curriculums.
