Sulaimaniyah Kurdistan-Iraq - A
number of farmers from Shahr'zur region have
expressed their resentment for opening the door for
traders to import vegetables and fruit from Iran,
which led to the decrease of the prices of their
products.
Some of them have threatened of organizing a
demonstration march to impose pressure on the
competent authorities, for the purpose of closing
the border outlets with Iran against the movement of
importing agricultural commodities.
A farmers' organization activist, who is the
official of the branch of the farmers union in
Sayyid Sadeq town, confirmed to 'Al Sharq Al Awsat'
that this matter is vital for farmers. He pointed
out that the importation of agricultural items
contradicts with the principles of agricultural
development that are promoted in the region.
The farmers' official added that there are serious
deliberations with competent authorities that might
end in drawing a valid agricultural policy that
includes the interests of farmers.
