Mullah Krekar for his part says that he is only
former leader of a national freedom movement in
Northern Iraq, and that he poses no threat to
Norway.
Thursday's decision by the Oslo court does not mean
that Krekar will be expelled immediately.
The European Human Rights Convention forbids the
expulsion of anyone to a country where one may be
exposed to torture or inhuman treatment.
In addition, he cannot be expelled as long as his
case is before a Norwegian court. And Krekar's
lawyer, Brynjar Meling, immediately made it clear
that his client would appeal the verdict.
Aftenposten editor Harald Stanghelle says to NRK
that Norway will have to live with the Krekar case
for a long time to come, and that it may eventually
end up before the High Court.
Mullah Krekar came to Norway as a refugee, and was
given political asylum in 1992.
However, he is alleged to have broken the condition
for asylum status, since he has several times
returned to Northern Iraq.
