Arbil - The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
has announced that it has decided to transfer about
400 Kurdish-Iranian families from a camp near the
Syrian-Iraqi borders to Iraqi Kurdistan, as they
have been exposed to armed attacks.
In a press conference, Amin Awwad, UNHCR official in
Iraq, said, "The operation of transferring these
refugees to Kurdistan has been discussed with the
government of the region, so as to guarantee their
rights, due to their special condition." Awwad
confirmed that the Kurdish officials in Iraqi
Kurdistan region have expressed their readiness to
cooperate with the UNHCR for assisting those
refugees.
The UN convoy pointed out that those families have
reached Iraq coming from Iran in 1979, due to their
opposition to the Shah regime, who was in power in
Iran at that time. Since the fall of the Iraqi
regime, they were witnessing very bad security
conditions sue to the repetitive armed attacks
against them.
