The Kurdistan Alliance in the Iraqi Assembly asked
the Iraqi National Assembly and the Ministry of
Defence to improve the security situation of the
main roads that connect the Kurdistan region to
Baghdad. Failing to do that the peshmerga forces
should be tasked to protect the roads that connect
the Kurdistan region to Baghdad. The Kurdistan
Alliance said the peshmerga forces were ready to
carry out this task.
Nasrullah Surchi, Kurdish member of the Iraqi
National Assembly, told Aso newspaper that the
Kurdistan Alliance had presented a memorandum to the
Iraqi National Assembly in which they demanded that
the Iraqi Ministry of Defence should protect the
main roads that connect the Kurdistan region to
Baghdad, such as the roads via Uzaym-Mosul-Tikrit.
He said incidents of terrorism and theft had been
carried out against travellers, trades people and
officials.
Surchi also said the memorandum, which was signed by
many MPs from other factions, demanded that if the
Iraqi government did not protect the roads, the
responsibility of the protection of the roads should
be handed over to the Kurdistan regional government
and the Peshmerga forces. Surji added: Peshmerga
forces are ready to take over responsibility for
this task.
