Mebder Al Weis, Secretary-General of Al Wehda Party,
has expressed that in case the federation, as a
political system, is established in Iraq away from
the sectarian basis; it can reinforce the unity of
the Iraqi people.
On this ground, he believes in the right of the
Kurdish people in establishing a federation, as it
is a part of a Kurdish nation. Nevertheless, he does
not acknowledge a sectarian federation in the south,
as they are Arabs. Within an interview with Al Mada,
he said, "We, as a national Arab unionist party, do
not believe in sectarianism, reject racism and seek
the accomplishment of a diverse democratic federal
system that fulfills the ambitions of all the
constituents of the Iraqi people; Arabs, Kurds,
Turkmen and all the other minorities. Therefore, we
believe in the establishment of a federation, not on
a sectarian basis. Bases on this ground, the Kurdish
people have the right to establish a federation as
they represent a race that has a history and has
coexisted with the Arabs for hundreds of years. In
addition, the Arabs are a part of the Arab nation
that acknowledges that the Kurds are a part of a
divided Kurdish nation.
He pointed out that Arabs reside in the south;
therefore it is impermissible to establish a
federation on a sectarian basis. On the contrary, we
are calling for establishing a non-central
administration that practices its works under the
supervision of the central state. He pointed out
that the constitution draft, which is ready to be
submitted for the plebiscite should fulfill the
ambitions of all the constituents of Iraqi people
and stress the Arab and Islamic identity of Iraq.
He added, "There are countries like Iran, whose
population is 70 million people and where millions
of Arabs, Kurds and Belushyans reside. Nevertheless,
it is called Persia. In addition, in Turkey there
are 6 million Arabs in Al Iskandarona, and more than
20 million Kurds, and is yet called Turkey. Malaysia
is a member of the Islamic Countries Conference
despite the fact that the percentage of Muslims in
it does not exceed 55%. Then why are there worries
that we call Iraq an Arab and Islamic country, which
is the founder of the Arab League.
As regards the national reconciliation that a number
of forces are calling for, the Secretary-General of
Al Wehda party said that the reconciliation is
established through the application of law and the
predominance of the spirit of justice. It should not
be understood upon clannish grounds. Whoever has
harmed the Iraqi people should be punished,
regardless of his loyalty, as the fundamental
criterion for reconciliation is the law.
