Talabani: Russia must review policy towards Iraq 12.9.2005

MOSCOW/BAGHDAD. Sept 11 (Interfax) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has urged Russia to become a friend of the current Iraqi authorities and linked this to prospects for Russian companies' return to the Iraqi market.

"Russia's current policy [regarding Iraq] is not a realistic policy. I would say this position conveys a rather unfriendly look," Talabani said in an interview with Interfax.

"Russian companies must understand that if their government does not pursue a consistent policy towards Iraq they will not be able to return [to the Iraqi market] Only a friendly state policy will allow Russian businesses to come back to Iraq," the Iraqi president said.

"Russia looks at Iraq through the prism of its relations with the U.S., relations of friendship or confrontation. Meanwhile, you must build good relations with this government, with this parliament, with the legal parties and political groups," he said.

"The Russian government must revise its policy in Iraq and be friends with the new regime. I assure you this regime will stay for a long time and terrorism will not be able to overthrow it," the Iraqi president said.

Asked about Russian oil company Lukoil's contract with the Saddam regime to jointly develop the Western Qurna-2 oil field, Talabani said, the Russian company had dealt "with Saddam, not with Iraq."

"People look at all this with disgust now. The parliament has even discussed the scrapping of all contracts signed with the previous regime," Talabani said.
