First military mission for the new Iraqi
Air Force

A
spokesman for the American army said that the new
Iraqi air force has executed its first military
operation, when it transported two regiments of
Iraqi soldiers from the north of Iraq.
General Rick Lynch said that this week, three
shipping airplanes (type Hercules 130 C) have
carried soldiers from the Iraqi 2nd Division from
Erbil to Tala'far, near the Syrian borders. Lynch
said, "This is the first time in which the Iraqi air
forces are used." |

It is worth mentioning that the Iraqi air forces
were enjoying great strength during Saddam Hussein's
regime. By the end of the 80s, they used to include
approximately 750 fighter planes, hundreds of
helicopters and heavy shipping planes. The Iraqi air
force, which was founded in 1931, has participated
in many wars in the Middle East. It fought against
the British in 1941, Israel in 1948 and 1967 and
against the Iranians for eight years (1980-1988).
