Baghdad - Zalmay Khalilzad, US ambassador to
Baghdad, confirmed that he has played the role of
mediation among the Iraqi parties in charge of
drafting the constitution, so as to bring the
different opinions closer and reach middle
solutions.
On the other hand, the British Ambassador to Iraq,
William Patey, spoke about a similar role that he
played as he has urged Iraqis to vote in favor of
this constitution "for the purpose of the success of
the democratic experiment, which is new for Iraq and
the Arab region, in a more accurate sense."
In a press conference held in Baghdad, the American
ambassador considered that the new Iraqi
constitution is a guarantee for the unity and
stability of the country "as all parties are deeply
interested in solving the suspended problems. The
Kurds, with their free will, desired to return to
the new Iraq. The free practice is a means which is
stronger that freedom that is imposed on people."
During a press conference held in the headquarters
of the British embassy in Baghdad, the British
ambassador has welcomed the approval of the
constitution draft in the National Assembly and
urged to participate in the plebiscite and voting
with "Yes" on the suggested draft.
Patey considered that it is premature to expect the
failure of the constitution or to refuse voting on
it. He stressed, "This issue is left for the Iraqi
people.
The announcement of the constitution draft does not
mean the approval of all parties on this draft as
there is opposition on behalf of certain entities.
What matters is that the drafting of the
constitution is appositive step in the political
process and is considered as an alternative for
violence adopted by some entities as a solution for
participation in expressing their opinions.
" Patey undervalued the worries of some identities
that the federation would lead to the division of
Iraq. he noted that the constitution "states that
the federal government would work on the unity and
safety of Iraqi lands and that the federation is the
source of the power and unity of the country, as it
is the case in Britain and the rst of the countries
that are enjoying the federal system."
