800 dollar fine for a Kurdish name

Newsdesk, Aug 2 - The chairman of the Human Rights Association's (IHD) Bingol office in Turkey, Ridvan Kizgin, was fined 1,112 YTL (~800 US$) by the Bingol Governorship for writing "Cewlik", the Kurdish name of Bingol, in an official document.

The Kurdish human rights activist Ridvan Kizgin had written a letter to the Bingol governor and to the Interior Ministry on June 29, touching on the issue of ongoing military operations in the area. In the end of the document, Kizgin had written "The IHD Bingol (Cewlik) Office", which gave the Governor the chance to fine Kizgin for breaking paragraph 31 of the 'Associations Law', which forces all documents from official associations to be written in Turkish.

Kizgin has sent an appeal to the Elazig District Administrative Tribunal for the annulment of the fine

Police precinct in Sirnak attacked by HPG

Turkey-Kurdistan, Aug 2 - A Turkish police precinct in the city of Sirnak in northern Kurdistan (southeastern Turkey) was attacked by HPG guerrillas late night on August 1. The precinct was hit by RPG's and police officers positioning around the building were targeted by guerrilla snipers.

Fierce clashes were reported by local sources, but there was no information on casualties from either side.

Attacks on military and police bases have increased since Turkey started its large-scale military operations against the Kurdish HPG guerrillas. HPG has declared that they will not attack Turkish military positions if they are left alone, but has vowed to retaliate as long as the Turkish military keep on attacking HPG or Kurdish civilians.

The HPG stated that a total of 207 Turkish soldiers and 16 Iranian soldiers have been killed in guerrilla retaliations in July..
