800 dollar fine for a Kurdish name

- The chairman of the Human Rights Association's (IHD)
Bingol office in Turkey, Ridvan Kizgin, was fined
1,112 YTL (~800 US$) by the Bingol Governorship for
writing "Cewlik", the Kurdish name of Bingol, in an
official document.
The Kurdish human rights activist Ridvan Kizgin had
written a letter to the Bingol governor and to the
Interior Ministry on June 29, touching on the issue
of ongoing military operations in the area. In the
end of the document, Kizgin had written "The IHD
Bingol (Cewlik) Office", which gave the Governor the
chance to fine Kizgin for breaking paragraph 31 of
the 'Associations Law', which forces all documents
from official associations to be written in Turkish.
Kizgin has sent an appeal to the Elazig District
Administrative Tribunal for the annulment of the
fine
Police precinct in Sirnak attacked by HPG
Turkey-Kurdistan,
Aug 2 - A Turkish police precinct in the city of
Sirnak in northern Kurdistan (southeastern Turkey)
was attacked by HPG guerrillas late night on August
1. The precinct was hit by RPG's and police officers
positioning around the building were targeted by
guerrilla snipers.
Fierce clashes were reported by local sources, but
there was no information on casualties from either
side.
Attacks on military and police bases have increased
since Turkey started its large-scale military
operations against the Kurdish HPG guerrillas. HPG
has declared that they will not attack Turkish
military positions if they are left alone, but has
vowed to retaliate as long as the Turkish military
keep on attacking HPG or Kurdish civilians.
The HPG stated that a total of 207 Turkish soldiers
and 16 Iranian soldiers have been killed in
guerrilla retaliations in July..
Syria puts two more PKK members in prison
SYRIA, Aug 2- The Syrian State Security Court
in Damascus sentenced two PKK members to prison for
'separatism' according to the Kurdish news agency
MHA.
The two Kurds, Hesen Seyf Alaadin and Ibrahim Osman,
were sentenced to 2.5 years. The verdict for six
other Kurdish PKK members also accused of
'separatism' was postponed.
