Turkey Kurdistan News - in Brief 1.8.2005

Famous Turkish arms smuggler has died in cancer

NewsDesk, Aug 1 - Ertaç Tinar (68), also known to the public as "the businessman who imported weapons for the Turkish state", has died of cancer in Istanbul after his treatment failed.

Ertaç Tinar's name began to circulate in the media after he was interrogated by the Premiership Investigation Council for involvement in the gang whose existence was discovered through the Susurluk scandal in 1996. Tinar became widely known as the profiteer who imported untraceable weapons for the Turkish army. Tinar served as the chairman for 'World Turkish Businessmen's Assembly' and was the owner of the company Hospro with headquarters in London, UK.

The once important man had apparently became such a pariah in Turkish state circles that he was at first going to be buried by the Istanbul municipality if a friend of his wouldn't have visited the hospital on Thursday. His funeral was attended by few people.

What was the Susurluk Scandal? (Courtesy of www.emep.org )

The Susurluk scandal (3rd of November, 1996) was a scandal uncovered by a traffic accident that took place in Susurluk, Balikesir. Due to this accident, the dark and obscure relations between the state, the gangs and the mafia were brought to the agenda of the public. Never before had the close bond between the state and the gangs (these gangs of a fascist character, were in fact mostly encouraged and supported by the state and it is now known that they have been used in countless murders of revolutionary and democratic people) been so obvious till this date. Despite the strong reaction of the people in general and the many promises of the politicians, no serious result has been obtained from the investigations.

Police kills one Village Guard, mistook them for Kurdish guerrillas

Turkey-Kurdistan, Aug 1 - A newly appointed Turkish police officer in the Kocaköy district of Amed (Diyarbakir) killed one paramilitary Village Guard and wounded another one when he in panic mistook them for Kurdish guerrillas.

The incident happened at 22:00 (10 pm EEST) on July 30 when three Village Guards entered the district governorship premises to head home, returning from patrol. The newly appointed Turkish police officer mistook them for guerrillas and fired at them with a Uzi submachine gun, killing Murat Üçgül and seriously wounding Yilmaz Kaya. A third Village Guard, Mehmet Kaya, managed to flee and hide.

The Kocaköy district governorship issued a statement regretting the incident and called it an unfortunate mishap. The Turkish police on the other hand issued a statement blaming the Kurdish HPG guerrillas for the killing of the Village Guards. The district governorship's investigation is continuing.

Village Guards clash with each other

Turkey-Kurdistan, July 31 - Three people were killed, among them a young girl, and four others were wounded when two families serving as Village Guards in the village of Yapraktepe in the district of Pervari in Siirt clashed with each other.

The clash occurred after the cattle of one family 'trespassed' into the other family's field. The village headman Mehmet Ali Kartal, his brother Abdulgafar Kartal and a young girl whose name could not be obtained were killed. Hasan Sait, his father Mehmet Sait and two other persons whose names could not be obtained were wounded and taken to Van State Hospital for treatment.

The clash was believed to be the climax of an earlier animosity due to the village headmen election on March 28, 2004.

Group threatens criminal elements in Kiziltepe

Turkey-Kurdistan, July 31 - The 'Apoist Youth Initiative' threatened to carry out attacks against bars, casinos, cafés and other premises which are suspected of conducting prostitution and drug sale in Kiziltepe in northern Kurdistan.

In a mail to the suspected premises, the group says:

"Our people are aware that in places like cafés, bars, casinos and other premises like these, prostitution and drug sale is being run by the current ruling system. We know that this and other disgusting games are done parallel to the Kurdish national liberation movement in order to damage our people's principles, customs and honour and to push them into a dark road without ending. We as the 'Apoist Youth Initiative' declare that we will not remain silent toward this kind of immoral premises whose aim is to degenerate our youth. We call to our Kurdish brothers and sisters to not be part of this kind of dealings. Otherwise we will, and we are emphasizing it, not remain silent."

A similar warning was given last year from the Kurdish female guerrillas YJA-STAR to premises of prostitution and drug sale in Dersim. Two bomb attacks against brothels in Dersim have already been carried out by the female guerrillas.

Contra-guerrillas are again on the arena

Turkey-Kurdistan Diyarbakir (DIHA) - It has been reported that a group of 6 persons with guns dressed like guerrillas living in Miranga district near Arikoy village (Herşen) in Silvan, Diyarbakir after it was evacuated, is threatening the public and taking the villagers' money, food and dressings.

According to the local sources, the members of the gang shot their guns randomly last night. The sources informed those people as the members of JITEM and said they introduced themselves as HPG guerrillas.

The inhabitants of the district stated those: "They are people known as shrivers. They speak Kurdish with the locals and demand money, food and the other needs of themselves. They are using cars without license plates."

They informed them as using official cars and the village policemen reported them to the County Gendarme Station but they were responded as not intervening them.
