ANKARA, Aug 26 (AFP) - 17h52 - Three rebels of
the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were
killed over two days of fighting with Turkish
security forces in the province of Batman, in
southeast Turkey, the Anatolia news agency reported
Friday.
One member of the PKK -- which Turkey considers a
terrorist group -- was captured, the news agency
said, citing local security sources.
The Kurdish separatist group Kongra-Gel, considered
the political wing of the PKK, called on August 19
for a unilateral one-month truce that was brushed
aside by the Turkish military, which has never
recognized PKK truces.
The PKK broke a five-year truce in June 2004 and the
armed group has stepped up its activities in the
past few months.
The conflict with the Kurdish separatist rebels has
claimed some 37,000 lives since 1984, the yar PKK
militants first took up arms in search of self-rule
in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast.
