Kurdish Lawmakers Say
Constitution is Big Achievement
(Al-Mashriq)
The Iraqi Kurdistan National Assembly announced
Wednesday it is taking part in the drafting of the
constitution, saying it is a big achievement for the
Kurds in this important era of Iraq. The Kurdish
parliament, which consists of 111 members, discussed
ten articles related to the Kurds in the
constitution. Head of the Kurdish parliament Adnan
al-Mufti said that Iraqi Kurdistan President Masood
Barzani has sent him a message describing the
constitution as a great and big achievement for the
Kurds. Al-Mufti added that there are some points in
the drafting that do not suit their ambitions but
did not mention those points.

Talabani: Stability of Iraq Depends on
Compatibility
(Al-Iraq al-Yoom)
President Jalal Talabani said the stability of Iraq
depends on the compatibility among the three
entities of the Iraqi people, adding that he will
keep talking with political leaders to reach a
consensus on the drafting of the constitution. He
said that Sunni Arabs should have their rights,
clarifying that the three main issues of
disagreement are the central government, mentioning
Saddam's Ba'ath Party in the draft of the
constitution, and the federalism.

Political Leaders to Discuss Constitution
(Al-Sabah)
With President Jalal al-Talabani presiding, leaders
of political blocs will meet to discuss the issues
of disagreement in the constitution before
presenting it to the National Assembly today or
tomorrow. The political blocs held a meeting
yesterday while the Sunni group held a separate
conference. They appeared optimistic about reaching
a solution that will satisfy all Iraqis. Iraqis hope
that the last minute meeting will help leaders reach
a consensus agreement about the issues of
disagreement. Talabani, in his meeting with Hachim
al-Hasani, said the constitution must be for the
interests of all Iraqis and not for the interests of
one group or sect.

Sunni Association Rejects Constitution
(Addustour)
In a dangerous development that might obstruct the
constitution, the Association of Muslim Scholars has
rejected the drafting of the constitution.
Association spokesman Abdul Salam al-Kubaisi said
among the reasons for their rejection is that the
constitution does not state that Sharia is the main
source of legislation in Iraq, adding that the draft
is American made. In this declaration, the Sunnis
announced their stance on the drafting of the
constitution, which may threaten national
compatibility.
