Barzani: Kurds Won't
Compromise on Their Rights

Iraqi Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani said the
Kurds won't bargain away their rights to be stated
in the drafting of the constitution. In his meeting
with the two political bureaus of the main Kurdish
parties, he said what the Kurds are requesting is
"the least of our rights." He also said the Kurds
shouldn't compromise on the issues of Kirkuk,
natural resources, federalism, the peshmerga, and
the right to have their own laws drawn up in the
parliament of Kurdistan.

Talabani Meets U.S. Ambassador
(Al-Mada)
Within the framework of negotiations on drafting the
constitution, President Jalal Talabani met the
American Ambassador to Iraq Zalmai Khalil Zada. They
agreed on the constitution meeting the deadline with
the participation of the different Iraqi spectrums
in this process. Talabani also met the new head of
the Sunni Endowment and a delegation of religious
scholars who affirmed the necessity of participation
in the political process and confronting terrorism.
In his meeting with Kurdish professors residing in
Baghdad, Talabani affirmed the necessity of
developing higher education and raising the
scientific and cultural standards at university
organizations.

Saddam Trial to Air on TV
(Al-Mashriq)
Muwaffaq al-Rubai, a consultant for national
security issues, said the trial for deposed
president Saddam Hussein will be aired live on
television. He added that the trial will be a good
example for the Arab and Muslim states to follow as
it will be a just trial. Saddam was most recently
questioned for his suppression of the southern Shia
snf northern Kurd uprising in 1991. No decision has
been made on when the trial would start.

Constitution Committee Rejects Delaying Charter
(Baghdad)
Munther al-Fadhil, a member of the committee charged
with drafting the constitution, said the group
decided to reject any postponement of the
constitution. He said Humam Hamoodi, the head of the
committee, requested a one-month postponement but
the committee unanimously rejected his request.
Rasim al-Awadi, a committee member from the Iraqi
List bloc, said the constitution should meet the
deadline and the Iraqi bloc, the Kurdish Alliance,
and the communists will reject any request of
postponement. Meanwhile Fuad Masoom, deputy head of
the committee to draft the constitution, said he
preferred that the marja'iya, the Shia clerical
leadership, not intervene in aiding any of the
electoral lists.

Disagreements Remain Over Constitution
(Al-Bayan)
Sheikh Humam Hamoodi, head of the committee to draft
the constitution, said although the constitution
will be handed over to the parliament by the
deadline, disagreements remain. He said the issues
that have yet to be resolved are federalism, the
distribution of natural resources, the role of
Islam, dual citizenship, and the official languages.
He added that all the members, including the Sunnis,
are trying their best to have the constitution ready
by the due date.
