Iraq: Lawmakers approve creation of High
Criminal Court

Baghdad, 5 August
(AKI) - Iraqi's National Assembly parliament has
unanimously approved a law for the creation of a
high criminal court for war crimes and those
committed against humanity.
The new court is set to try the former Iraqi
dictator Saddam Hussein and other political leaders
of the Baath regime. A member of parliament, Ali al-Dabbagh,
told Adnkronos International (AKI) that the
tribunal's sentences will be final since they cannot
be modified either by the Iraqi president or the
cabinet.
The court's ten judges, who cannot be former members
of Saddam's Baath party, will be selected from the
countyr's appeal and cassation courts. |

Other members of the
court include a state prosecutor and two supporting
institutions - for the administration and the
finances.
The law, which includes eight chapters and forty
different articles, will allow the court to appoint
state lawyers to the accused who cannot afford their
own legal counsel. It also includes a set of
measures designed to proetect witnesses, especially
the victims of sexual violence.
