Baghdad, 24 August (AKI) - Armed men have
attacked the convoy of a high ranking official from
the Iraq Ministry of Justice in the capital,
Baghdad. The gunmen opened fire on the under
secretary's convoy, as it travelled along a street
in the al-Quzat district of western Baghdad. The
official was not in the convoy at the time, a source
from the interior ministry said, but at least three
of his bodyguards and a civilian are reported to
have been injured. Other reports say four of his
bodyguards were killed.
It comes two days after an assassination attempt on
the Iraqi environment minister, Narmin Uthman, in
which gunmen attacked her convoy to the north of
Baghdad. The minister, a Kurd, escaped the attack
unhurt, but three of her bodyguards were injured and
some of the attackers are thought to have been
killed.
The assassination attempts come at a time of high
tension in Iraq, as the different political factions
wrangle over the text of the constitution, which is
due to be presented to parliament on Thursday.
