TEHRAN, Aug 18 (AFP) - 16h42 - An Iranian
policeman was killed and five others were injured by
a landmine planted close to the Iraqi border by
suspected Kurdish rebels, the IRNA news agency said
Thursday.
The police unit was patrolling an area near the west
Iranian city of Sardasht on Wednesday when their
vehicle struck the mine, IRNA quoted an unidentified
local official as saying.
The official blamed the incident on Pejak, a group
which Iranian authorities say is linked to the
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), active across the
border in Turkey and northern Iraq.
The latest death takes to nine the number of Iranian
soldiers reported to have been killed in clashes
with the group in mainly Kurdish areas of
northwestern Iran in recent months. Two civilians
have also died.
