Jalal Talabani: Arab Sunnis' demands must be met 24.8.2005

BAGHDAD, Aug 24 (KUNA) -- The stability and prosperity of the new Iraq is only feasible through restoration of harmony among the three main components of the Iraqi people and the demands of the Arab Sunnis must be met, Iraqi President Jalal Talebani told a press conference Wednesday.

Talebani addressed the conference in Baghdad along with Head of the National Congress Dr. Hajim Al-Hasani, and said talks and consultations are ongoing as the demands of the Arab Sunnis must be addressed and the three points of controversy must be worked out.

The three disputed points relate to the central government, mention of the Saddam Baath regime in the constitution draft and the federal issue.

Talebani stressed while there are different points of view on mention of the Saddam Baath regime in the constitution, it is agreed that all those involved in bloodshed should be expelled from the Iraqi social fabric.

He further pointed out the measures to that end must bear in mind the difference between Saddam Baathis and the simple Iraqis who sought party membership to secure their livelihoods.

On the federal issue, the president said there is agreement on the situation regarding Kurdistan as self rule is the region was approved in the year 1970.

The federal experience in Kurdistan is meanwhile 15-year rich and the Arab Sunnis want to approve this mode gradually rather than oppose it altogether.

Meetings have been ongoing since yesterday and are to continue till Thursday, Talebani said adding "we want a referendum on October 15 and we want a 'yes' vote." "The crucial point is not simply to draft a constitution, but rather to draft a constitution that is approved by the people ..." Talebani stated the objective is "a constitution that serves the entire Iraqi spectrum and not an exclusive group."(
