Barzani: Disputes over main points in Iraqi constitution remain unsolved 18.8.2005

ARBIL, Aug 17 (KUNA) - President of Kurdistan Region in Iraq Masaud Barzani said on Wednesday that the main points in the Iraqi constitution are still unsolved.

In a statement in Kurdish language broadcasted by a television station for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Barzani said that a number of meetings have been held lately regarding the constitution and "we are obliged to discuss the constitution one item at a time as the constitution defines Iraq's fate." Barzani, who is heading a delegation to Baghdad to discuss constitutional issues, said that most of the disputes are between the Shiites and the Sunnis, not with the Kurds, noting that Kurds have some critical main points that they would defend and insist on.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government Nechirvan Barzani said in a statement that the Kurdistan Region insists on reaching a constitution that grants all Kurds' rights, including the city of Kirkuk.

He also accused some Sunni representatives of delaying the constitution's draft, noting that they still dream of Saddam's Iraq.

He added that Kirkuk is part of Kurdistan from historical and geographical stands, while the former Iraqi regime manipulated the administrative borders of Kirkuk Province, and a referendum must be organized regarding this matter.

Nechirvan Barzani said that some people claim that the Kurdish stands are based upon oil and independence, noting that oil is still the reason behind the Kurds' crisis, as if it wasn't for the oil, Saddam would not have fought with the Kurds over Kirkuk and would not have deported Kurds from the city, asserting that Kurds demand fair and equal division of wealth.
