Geneva, August 7, 2005 - The Kurdistan Regional
Government Coordinator to the UN Dr. Dindar Zebari
met United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for
Refugees Ms. Wendy J. Chamberlin.
Dr. Zebari and Ms. Chamberlin discussed that some
countries in Europe have considered the
circumstances in the Kurdistan region different from
the other parts of Iraq and more importantly
stability in Kurdistan made Europeans to recount
their position on rejected Kurdish asylum seekers
living in Europe. Dr. Zebari requested that KRG
should be consulted and informed on the issue of
Kurdish asylum seekers in Europe for any further
steps.
Among other issues discussed were the issues of
security, stability and future employment
opportunities available in Kurdistan. In return,
UNHCR officials appreciated the KRG position on the
issue of Kurdish asylum seekers which was always
seen as more realistic. Furthermore, UNHCR
representatives have also concluded that any future
discussions on the above issues must be channelled
through parties involved in the process including
UNHCR, the federal government of Iraq and the
Kurdistan Regional Government.
UNHCR officials hoped an open international dialogue
takes place to guarantee and ensure that human and
political rights of all the Iraqi citizens are
respected.
Mr. Ekber Menemencioglu (director of regional bureau
for central Asia, south west Asia, North Africa and
the Middle East), Mr. Emmanuel Giganac (senior desk
officer for Iraq support unit in regional bureau for
central Asia, south west Asia, North Africa and the
Middle East - CASEANAME) attended the meeting.
