He said, "We found it
necessary that before leaving to Baghdad tomorrow,
to participate in the meeting of the Iraqi political
leaders, we should confirm, with regard to the
coming Iraqi constitution, that there is no
bargaining on the rights of Kurdistani people. These
rights are not for the Kurdish people, but for all
Iraqis."
Barzani described the stage of drafting the
constitution as "a golden chance". Nevertheless, he
said, "The chance would be wasted in case we do not
do what is necessary." Barzani pointed out that
there are significant points, including "The Iraqi
identity, Kurdistan's geographical borders, the
issue of the Peshmargeh, and the natural resources
and article 58."
Barzani requested that a delegation from the Kurdish
parliament and the Kurdistani political parties
participate with him in these discussions, which
would be held in Baghdad. He confirmed that the
final decision would be taken in the Kurdish
parliament. He requested the MPs to be ready for
holding another urgent session after the end of the
discussions in Baghdad, in the coming few days.
Barzani stressed that the Kurds would not accept
that the Iraqi identity would be Islamic.
He said, "We respect all religions, especially
Islam, as it is the religion of the majority.
Nevertheless, we would not accept imposing an
Islamic identity on Iraq." Barzani criticized the
calls for Iraq to become a part of the Arab nation.
He said, "Let the Arab section of Iraq be a part of
the Arab nation, but we are not a part of the Arab
nation." He clarified, "I am not with the
postponement of the constitution as the conditions
would become worse." He added, "We have a legal
right to reject it, in case it did not guarantee all
our rights."
