Barazani: Kurds have right to demand autonomy 5.8.2005

ERBIL, (KUNA) - President of Kurdistan region Massoud Barazani said Thursday that Kurds have had the right to demand independence in the appropriate time, stressing that, at this time, Kurds have been preoccupied with establishing a federal democratic Iraq.

Barazani's statement came in a joint press conference with former Iraqi premier Eyad Allawi and US Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad in Salaheddin resort near the northern Iraqi city of Irbil.

The Kurdish President said that the Kurdish parliament has decided to preserve Kurds' rights within an Iraqi constitution, insisting that Kurds sustain the right to demand independence in the right time.

"We (Kurds) insist that the coming constitution include no less than what came in the interim Iraqi laws regarding Kurdistan's people," he added, expressing willingness to participate in the meetings concerning the constitution drafting in Baghdad.

From his side, Allawi said "I can assert that we agree with our Kurdish brothers regarding Kurdistan and the federation." The US Ambassador visited Kirkuk, Sulaimaniya and Halabja yesterday. He arrived today in Salaheddin resort, accompanied by Allawi, Iraqi Deputy Premier Roz Shawis and Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
