BAGHDAD, Aug 27 (KUNA) -- Sunni negotiators
would be giving their final decision on the draft
constitution on Sunday, said Chairman of the Iraqi
National Assembly Hajem Al-Hosni on Saturday.
Al-Hosni said in a press statement Sunni negotiators
are currently studying the amendments made by Shiite
negotiators on the issue of federalism, as well as
the stance on members of the Baath Party.
Deliberations had continued into late Friday night
in an attempt to reach an agreement on the draft
constitution after the United Iraqi Alliance
presented its final draft.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Al-Chalabi
said some Sunni negotiators have agreed to
amendments made by the Shiites on the draft
pertaining to the issue of federalism and Iraqi
areas falling outside the province of Kurdistan.
According to Jawad Al-Maliki, United Iraqi Alliance
representative at the committee for placing the
constitution, the alliance cannot make further
compromises other than the amendments that have
already been made.
As for Sunni negotiator Tareq Al-Hashemi, he said
the amendments are still unsatisfactory.
Sources from within the negotiations said the new
amendments include a new voting mechanism in
governorates that call for the establishment of
provinces, where a parliamentary majority of 50
percent plus one would be required.
Further amendments include the implementation of the
De-Baathification Law for the next eight years,
following which the National Assembly would vote on
whether to suspend it or continue its
implementation.
