A
protest of thousands of Sunni Arabs took place
Monday in the Iraqi town of Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's
hometown. The protestors denounced the draft
constitution produced by the Shiite- and
Kurd-dominated Iraqi parliament as "Jewish", saying
it was designed to divide Iraq along ethnic lines.
Protestors in Tikrit waved pictures of the deposed
Saddam Hussein, chanting "Our souls and blood will
redeem you, Saddam!" They also carried pictures of
Shiite imams who are opposed to the constitution, as
well as to American presence in Iraq. Official Sunni
delegates to the constitution negotiations called
the final draft "illegitimate," asking for the
intervention of the UN and the Arab League.
The draft constitution will be voted upon in a
nationwide referendum in October. Sunnis fear losing
out, as they represent only 20% of the population.
