Mother tongue campaign reaches 60,000 signatures within 3 days
(Source: DIHA)

Turkey-Kurdistan, July 11 - DIYARBAKIR (DIHA) - In the eastern city of Diyarbakır, 60,000 petitions have hitherto been collected in the scope of the 'I demand education in mother tongue' campaign.

Medeni Alkpaya of the Initiative Campaign Demanding Right to Be Educated in Mother Tongue said the obstacles and prohibitions set before education in mother tongue fuel conflicts and spoil the atmosphere of peace, so insuring no nonappearance of conflicts and peace will be provided by education in mother tongue.

The campaign 'I demand education in mother tongue' was launched in Turkey's 81 provinces on June 1, with demand of education in mother tongue, aiming to make those issues of the Constitution which hinder education and training in mother be abolished; so the Confederation of Public Employees' Trade Union opened two stands at Sanat Sokağı and Koşuyolu Park, Diyarbakır, on July 8, Friday. Since then, the petition count has arrived at 60,000. The signatures to be collected in the scope of the camping, which has still been lasting, are going to be sent the Turkish Grand National Assembly and the European Parliament (EP).

'We will make a contribution to Turkey doing its homework'
"With the campaign, we are aiming to make the provisions included in Articles, 3, 42 and 66 of the Constitution be changed by putting pressures on the government", said Medeni Alpkaya and, "to warn the AKP administration to lay down the legislative regulation required in terms of the point in question".

Appraising the campaign as an attempt aiming to make contributions in the EU process to harmonize with the European community in the realm of the law, Alpkaya expressed his opinion that Turkey should do its homework very while on the way to the EU. "We will, too, concur to do this homework; because, for a contemporary and modern Turkey cannot be a candidate for getting access to the EU".

'Education in mother tongue is to assure non-conflict era'
"If there are hindrances ahead of mother tongue and if these obstacles and prohibition have kept on protecting their vigor, this situation means being an invitation to clashes; to raising tension and disturbing peace. We say that providing education and training in mother tongue will secure peace, tolerance and non-conflicting atmosphere, which is a crucial step. We are expecting Turkey to take a step towards this matter. Just as how reforms are made in democratic, civilized and contemporary countries, we are awaiting Turkey to pass similar reforms", added Alpkaya.

Courses left insufficient
Reminding that there are some language courses enabling to teach Kurdish, Alpkaya highlighted to the number which he evaluated as insufficient. "A person's mother tongue who uses Kurdish is the Kurdish Language, and the language of a person who uses Turkish is the Turkish language. This is unquestionable. It is also known well that there are other languages spoken apart from Turkish in Turkey", said Alpkaya.
